Der knapp gewählte Bildausschnitt rückt in einem nicht näher definierten Raum ganz das Geschehen in den Mittelpunkt. Die uns den Rücken zuwendenden Figuren auf eleganten Bugholzstühlen unterstreichen die Unmittelbarkeit dieses malerischen Close-up. In this small-format painting, Marie Bashkirtseff has depicted a Paris suburb in the fog. It is an unspectacular street scene in which the artist moves toward Impressionism. Born into an aristocratic family from what is now Ukraine, Bashkirtseff studied painting in Paris. She died of tuberculosis at the age of only twenty-six. After her death, her family arranged for her diaries to be published. As a result, she became known throughout Europe and many women artists looked to her as a role model. In the Fog was shown at a major exhibition in Vienna in 1910. In this picture the Spanish envoy Don José Augustin Marquis del Llano, who worked at the Austrian court from 1787 to 1794, is not shown in diplomatic garb but as a private individual. He is depicted as a person of refined taste wearing a fur-trimmed dressing gown in shimmering, delicate colours. The marquis must have valued his privacy and this is also expressed by the fact that he is shown with a bare head – without a wig. Wenig später, 1852, hat Pettenkofen gänzlich mit der Porträtmalerei aufgehört und sich dem Malen von Landschaften gewidmet. Der Biograph Weixlgärtner meinte dazu, Pettenkofen wollte nicht "von Meinungen und Wünschen des Sitzenden, die bekanntlich denen des Künstlers häufig entgegenlaufen, abhängig sein." Women from the aspirational bourgeoisie were particularly impressed and everyone wanted a portrait by Makart. His patrons were those entrepreneurs, merchants, and bankers who had made their fortunes through industrialization.
