The sculptor captures the moment when Andromeda, as if in a daze, steps away from the rock to which she had been chained, while Perseus stands at her side, offering his support. The monster he has just slain appears beneath the rock on the left. Zauner’s turn toward the ideal of the human form in classical antiquity indicates that his work stands at the transition from Baroque to Neoclassicism. Zauner headed the sculpture class at the Academy of Fine Arts and served as its director from 1806 to 1815. During this period, the institution became one of the most important art academies in Europe.</schema:description><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/775/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/5610/full</schema:image><schema:name>Pietà</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>c. Ulrike Gauß lehnt in ihrer Monographie zu Thamasch die "Madonna mit Kind" jedoch als ein Werk dieses Künstlers ab und schreibt es einem anonymen Meister des ausgehenden 17. Night after night, Cupid visited the princess. Psyche has closed her eyes anticipating his kiss, for in the classical myth she was ordered not to look at her beloved. Friedl has taken marble to the limits of what is technically possible, emulating Rome’s great Baroque sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini some 250 years earlier. This exquisite workmanship is revealed especially in the figure of Cupid, his wings and his raised arm. A misplaced chisel or a careless hammer blow could have destroyed the entire work in a moment.</schema:description><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/4653/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/8899/full</schema:image><schema:name>Die Laut Dorfmeisters eigener Beschreibung besteht die Gruppe aus "[...] drei Figuren, nämlich Apollen, Minerva und einem Genius. With this small plaster sculpture, Hanns Gasser turned to a tragic episode in the life of his friend, the painter Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld. In 1846, Schnorr’s daughter Franca, one of the family’s six children, died of typhus at just sixteen. Gasser imagines this loss as a symbolic scene of farewell, placing the deceased Franca at its center. With her gaze lowered and her posture turned inward, she appears to withdraw, as though quietly taking leave of her sisters Marie (1831–1919) and Emilie (1832–1864), who remain closely attached to her. The three brothers are notably absent. Rendering such a personal subject as a genre-like, symbolic tableau is highly unusual. Other artists also responded to the girl’s untimely death; unlike Gasser, however, Friedrich Olivier and Gustav Jäger chose to depict her on her deathbed.</schema:description><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/898/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/16591/full</schema:image><schema:name>Christus und die Evangelisten</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>c. 1912/1917</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Josef Breitner]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Josef Breitner</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Faience</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/971/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/21184/full</schema:image><schema:name>Countess Therese Kinsky</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1871</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Jean-Baptiste Gustave Deloye]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Jean-Baptiste Gustave Deloye</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Terracotta</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/1111/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/14376/full</schema:image><schema:name>Apotheosis of St. John of Nepomuk</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>18th century</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Unbekannter Künstler]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Unbekannter Künstler</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Wood, painted and gilded</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/1324/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/144151/full</schema:image><schema:name>The Holy Sepulchre</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>undated</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Unbekannter Künstler]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Unbekannter Künstler</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Wood, painted and gilded</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/1325/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/62959/full</schema:image><schema:name>Net Draggers</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1903/1904</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Franz Barwig der Ältere]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Franz Barwig der Ältere</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Wood</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/1609/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/16984/full</schema:image><schema:name>Luna and Endymion</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1765</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Johann Georg Dorfmeister]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Johann Georg Dorfmeister</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Lead, bronzed</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/1942/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/16599/full</schema:image><schema:name>Three Female Torsos</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>undated</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Karl Albiker]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Karl Albiker</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Stucco</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/2767/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/4816/full</schema:image><schema:name>Apotheosis of Prince Eugene of Savoy</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>c. 1718/1721</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Balthasar Permoser]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Balthasar Permoser</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Marble</schema:artMedium><schema:description>Heute gilt diese Skulptur als eine der bedeutendsten Arbeiten Permosers, doch Prinz Eugen ließ sie in der wenig repräsentativen Mensa seiner Hausoffiziere im Oberen Belvedere aufstellen. There, the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova recognized Kiesling’s talent and became an important patron of the Austrian artist. With Canova’s support, Kiesling secured a prestigious commission for a marble group, Mars and Venus with Cupid. During the Napoleonic Wars, the sculpture was read in political terms: Love, in the guise of Venus, seeks to dissuade Mars, the god of war, from battle by offering a laurel branch. In the wake of Napoleon Bonaparte’s marriage to Marie Louise of Austria in 1810, the group, completed in 1809, came to be understood as an allegory of hope for peace. This led to the mistaken assumption that the court had commissioned the sculpture with the forthcoming marriage in mind.
