Eine dicht gedrängte Gruppe von festlich gekleideten Menschen unterschiedlichen Alters ist rund um eine reichlich gedeckte und geschmückte Tafel versammelt. Am rechten Bildrand hat ein Herr sein Glas erhoben, er setzt zu der titelgebenden Ansprache bei diesem ebenso förmlich wie familiär wirkenden Bankett an. Der knapp gewählte Bildausschnitt rückt in einem nicht näher definierten Raum ganz das Geschehen in den Mittelpunkt. Die uns den Rücken zuwendenden Figuren auf eleganten Bugholzstühlen unterstreichen die Unmittelbarkeit dieses malerischen Close-up. Wie dieses Bilderpaar (siehe auch Inv.-Nr. 1256b) zeigt, stellte der Künstler die menschlichen Charaktere äußerst treffend dar. Liebreiz und Charme wurden einer mürrischen und gereizten Stimmung geopfert. Es entsteht der Eindruck, als wäre es den Modellen unendlich unangenehm gewesen, gemalt zu werden. Wenig später, 1852, hat Pettenkofen gänzlich mit der Porträtmalerei aufgehört und sich dem Malen von Landschaften gewidmet. Der Biograph Weixlgärtner meinte dazu, Pettenkofen wollte nicht "von Meinungen und Wünschen des Sitzenden, die bekanntlich denen des Künstlers häufig entgegenlaufen, abhängig sein." Beide Gruppen oder Gesellschaftsschichten sind (wie im realen Leben) ohne wirkliche Berührungspunkte, worüber auch der Geistliche in der Mitte nicht hinwegtäuschen kann. Das Kruzifix an der Wand macht unmissverständlich deutlich, dass es ein gottgefälliges Werk ist, das die Gemeinde an ihren armen Mitgliedern It is not known why August von Pettenkofen accompanied the Austrian army as a war artist in the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848/49, but this military conflict preoccupied the artist as a subject through to the 1860s. His paintings do not represent Austrian and Russian soldiers in heroic poses, however, but capture the daily privations and horrors of war using a dark palette. The genre-like depiction of Bivouacking Russian Soldiers is still entirely in the tradition of Biedermeier Realism. Light, which falls evenly on the figures and the landscape from the left, does not introduce accents but evokes atmosphere, and in this approach Waldmüller was well ahead of his times. Wessely must have been an unassuming person, although he did have his portrait painted. He wears simple attire: a gray jacket and waistcoat with a shirt made of obviously unbleached linen and a black necktie. Krafft concentrates on the face that is characterized by lucid, penetrating eyes. Wessely’s slightly flushed cheeks add the only accent of color in the painting.
