Die beliebteste Szene war Rudolfs Begegnung im düsteren Wald mit dem Priester, dem er sein Pferd überließ, sodass dieser mit den Sterbesakramenten rascher zu einem Kranken gelangen konnte. Diese bereits zu Lebzeiten des Habsburgers kursierende Legende war von Friedrich von Schiller aufgegriffen und 1803 im Gedicht "Der Graf von Habsburg" neu formuliert worden. Die Veranschaulichung dieses Themas als Gemälde wurde von allerhöchster Stelle unterstützt, denn der Verweis auf die Eucharistie sollte die Nähe des Kaiserhauses zur katholischen Kirche demonstrieren. Jahrhunderts zu finden - so etwa im hinter der Madonna hochgezogenen Brokatstoff und in der Anordnung der Figuren, die an den Typus der "Sacra Conversazione" erinnert. Die Bezugnahme auf die italienische Malerei der Renaissance entspricht dem Denken der Nazarener. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Gruppe von Künstlern, die 1809 in Wien den "Lukasbund" gegründet hatte und wenig später in Rom Leben und Kunstausübung in den Dienst der Religion stellte. Der aus Böhmen stammende Führich hat zwei Jahre in ihrem Kreis gelebt und mit ihnen gearbeitet. Vor den Regalen liegen einige Totenköpfe, die fast im Dunkel verschwinden, zwischen wissenschaftlichen Geräten. Ludwig Schnorr von Carolsfeld orientiert sich bei seiner Darstellung an Goethes Faust I. In der Beschäftigung mit dem Sujet versucht Michael Krapf das persönliche Interesse am Übersinnlichen und Magischen Schnorr von Carolsfelds abzulesen. Denn der Künstler orientiere sich genau an Goethes Faust I und übernähme auch das Übernatürliche, Okkulte und Geheimnisvolle der Begegnungsszene zwischen Faust und Mephisto. Jahrhunderts. Ein Beispiel dafür wäre das Gemälde der Hl. Margareta von Raffael im Kunsthistorischen Museum in Wien. Die Gestaltung des Reittiers dieser Vorstudie erinnert an Ingres, der bei seiner Interpretation des Sujets ein ähnliches Mischwesen darstellte. In der endgültigen Version, die sich in der Wiener Akademie der bildenden Künste befindet (Inv.
