From the early 16th century onward, new forms increasingly found their way into art previously defined by the Gothic tradition. Many works from this period are characterized by an exciting mix of styles as a result. In the case of this small altarpiece, the classical architectural details and decorative elements point toward the Renaissance. Its overall winged design and its subject matter, on the other hand, still follow late medieval conventions. In the spirit of the emerging Renaissance, this was valued primarily for its artistic quality. a donor depicted in the lower right-hand corner of the image. It is Johannes Hinderkircher, who was canon and provost of Gurk Cathedral in the mid-15th century. In this role he commissioned a monumental lenten veil that was completed and confidently signed by the artist Konrad von Friesach in 1458. Bearing a close stylistic resemblance to the veil, this depiction of the Madonna can be attributed to the same painter. One of the artist’s specialties were so-called Christmas altarpieces featuring a carved depiction of the Nativity in the central shrine. All that survives of Klocker’s 1486 commission for the high altarpiece at San Leonardo in Passiria are the wooden figures of Mary and Joseph. In the original composition they would have been shown praying to the newborn Christ Child. Es stammt aus Heiligenblut am Jauerling in Niederösterreich und wurde nach dem Adelsgeschlecht Rogendorf benannt, deren Wappen sich auf der Predella finden. Das klassische Bildprogramm eines spätgotischen Flügelaltars wird hier besonders anschaulich: Im geschlossenen, also an Werktagen und während der Fastenzeit präsentierten Zustand waren Szenen aus der Passion Christi zu sehen. An Sonn- und Festtagen wurde der Altar geöffnet. Die dann sichtbaren Innenseiten der Flügel zeigen Marienszenen auf Goldgrund. Die Gottesmutter bildet auch die zentrale Figur im Mittelschrein, gerahmt von den Hll. Seelenheil und Seelennot wurden damit verinnerlicht und in das eigene Dasein integriert. So entsagt der Hl. Veit als Vorbild für christliche Frömmigkeit den weltlichen Verführungskünsten musizierender Jungfrauen. Sein Martyrium, erzählt die Legende, fand Veit schließlich in einem Kessel mit siedendem Öl – oder auch fallweise in einem Backofen, wie hier vom „Meister der Veitslegende“ in Szene
