Together with her husband Hugo Steiner she established Haus Steiner, built in 1910 by Adolf Loos, as a meeting place for the Vienna art scene. In 1927 the couple moved to Paris. Although still influenced at first by Expressionism, she gradually adopted a more decorative style. Steiner reacted to the rise of National Socialism in Germany and Austria with a growing politicization of her art. This self-portrait painted in 1937 shows the artist in her studio looking questioningly at the viewer. In the year of Austria’s annexation to Nazi Germany, Steiner’s work became even more explicit in its depiction of the downfall of Austria after Hitler’s takeover. </schema:description><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/2949/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/10975/full</schema:image><schema:name>Self-Portrait with Wife</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1934</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Franz Lerch]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Franz Lerch</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Oil on canvas</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/4833/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/9635/full</schema:image><schema:name>The Siblings</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1933</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Georg Ehrlich]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Georg Ehrlich</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Bronze</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/8844/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/11964/full</schema:image><schema:name>Winter in Gumpoldskirchen</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1932</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Georg Ehrlich]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Georg Ehrlich</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Oil on canvas</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/5089/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/84476/full</schema:image><schema:name>Balloon Seller</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1931</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Otto Rudolf Schatz]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Otto Rudolf Schatz</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Oil on canvas</schema:artMedium><schema:description>
Otto Rudolf Schatz returned from World War I as a committed pacifist. In his subsequent works, the artist critically commented on the misery, loneliness, and crime in the big city. This motif of the cool and melancholy Balloon Seller thus calls to mind the seedy side of the Prater amusement park in Vienna. The fact that the buyer is not visible makes space for sinister associations. In 1938 Schatz was banned from producing and exhibiting art and went underground in Prague over the ensuing years. He was arrested in 1944 and deported to different labor camps and to Gräditz concentration camp. After World War II, Schatz returned to Vienna and documented the rebuilding and recovery of the city in his paintings.</schema:description><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/1622/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/51812/full</schema:image><schema:name>Hans Tietze</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1931</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Georg Ehrlich]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Georg Ehrlich</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Bronze</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/5066/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/12777/full</schema:image><schema:name>The Inn River at Suben Looking North</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1930</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Ludwig Ferdinand Graf]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Ludwig Ferdinand Graf</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Oil on millboard</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/1963/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/12779/full</schema:image><schema:name>The Painter Roxane Zurunić</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1930</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Franz Lerch]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Franz Lerch</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Oil on canvas</schema:artMedium><schema:description>
During the interwar period, Franz Lerch, a native of Vienna, was regarded as a proponent of New Objectivity. However, his works from these years, despite their understated neatness, do not appear cold or austere, but always warm, organic, lively as compared to the works of his German counterparts. The woman portrayed here, Roxane Zurunić, cultivated a remarkable path in education for her time. She began her painting studies at the Vienna Academy in 1920 and pursued art history, archaeology, psychology, and architecture in Vienna and Zagreb, where she received her doctorate in 1938. She worked as a teacher and took part in numerous exhibitions with her works. We see the young woman captured in this portrait as self-confident, distinctive, and elegant. After completing his studies at the Munich Academy, Vienna-born Maximilian Reinitz lived in Budapest, Dresden, and Berlin. He returned to Vienna in 1914 and joined the Hagenbund artists’ association in 1920. After 1925, abandoned suburbs and Viennese vedute became the preferred themes of his paintings. His images drew on and shifted between Cubist and Neo-Concrete aesthetics. A characteristic of his compositions is their clear, partly crystalline forms and their homogeneous color treatments. Red Roofs combines interlocking but clearly delineated surfaces with an Expressionist application of color, notably on the surfaces of the walls.
