This painting represents the courageous rescue of the crew from the Austrian merchant ship “Pegno dʼAmicizia” that had run into difficulties near Brouwershaven off the Dutch coast in October 1852. Two of the emperor’s companions—dignitaries in fantasy costumes—observe this scene with undisguised disgust. There is nothing in this painting that is likely to have any historical accuracy, with the exception of the tanner laboriously removing remnants of flesh and fat from the animal hide draped across a log. This picture was one of more than thirty works by Russ displayed at the Academy exhibition of 1822. Der Wiener Bürgermeister empfängt den Monarchen vor der Stadt, am eigens für diesen Anlass errichteten Triumphbogen vor dem Kärntnertor. Die Beliebtheit und Volksnähe des Kaiserhauses wird durch die jubelnde Menschenmenge verdeutlicht. — Das kleine Bild ist das Musterstück für eines der drei monumentalen Wandgemälde im Audienzsaal der Wiener Hofburg. Der Kaiser hatte den Professor für Historienmalerei an der Wiener Akademie damit beauftragt, seine Beliebtheit im Volk anhand von drei Szenen aus der unmittelbaren Vergangenheit der österreichischen Geschichte zu veranschaulichen. Krafft, der zwei Jahre in Paris bei Jacques Louis David (1748-1825) gearbeitet und die französische Auffassung von Historienmalerei kennen gelernt hatte, war für diese Arbeit prädestiniert. Die Lebensnähe basiert auf einer erzählerischen Schilderung.
