It is Johannes Hinderkircher, who was canon and provost of Gurk Cathedral in the mid-15th century. In this role he commissioned a monumental lenten veil that was completed and confidently signed by the artist Konrad von Friesach in 1458. Bearing a close stylistic resemblance to the veil, this depiction of the Madonna can be attributed to the same painter. In the radiant aureole behind the Madonna, small dots have been punched into the gold ground in the shape of angels making music.
