The Vienna Prater is a recurring motif in the art of the landscape painter Tina Blau. The intense, impressionistic colors in this work break with the convention of the time in which a brown hue predominated in paintings. The artist had studied painting in private lessons and went on to teach as a professor at the Art School for Women and Girls in Vienna from 1898. Her favorite place to work was out in the open. Blau wanted to capture the atmospheres, light, and details of nature. In the middle of a park meadow bursting with flowers, the painter has placed his easel close to a bed of blooming hyacinths. Viennese artist Hugo Charlemont, who painted idyllic views of nature and floral still lifes, probably stepped away from the garden path to do so. This angle would not provide a full view of his subject. As a result, the picture appears cropped and slightly off-center. Nevertheless, this framing of the subject lends the imagery a spontaneous, real quality. Die Malerin scheint sich mitten in das Mohnfeld gesetzt zu heben, der Horizont liegt sehr hoch, so dass die weite Ebene schier unendlich erscheint. Dies ist eine vollkommen neue Perspektive – die die eigentliche Landschaft in den Hintergrund verdrängt und das unbedeutende Detail aus dem Vordergrund plötzlich in den Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung verlagert. Dadurch ergibt sich auch eine Art Durchdringung von Stillleben und Landschaft – wie es Marie Egner später bewusst getan hat. Es ist außerdem die konsequente Weiterführung der Ausschnitthaftigkeit der "paysages intimes" der 1870er Jahre. — Wisinger-Florian war zwar eine Schülerin Schindlers, aber sowohl künstlerisch als auch konstitutionell eine so starke Persönlichkeit, dass aus dem Lehrer-Schülerin-Verhältnis eine Konkurrenzsituation erwuchs. Es wurde vom Unterrichtsministerium gekauft und der Akademie der bildenden Künste übergeben. Bis Mitte der 1890er Jahre wurde es auf fünf Großausstellungen im Ausland gezeigt (u. a. 1893 Weltausstellung in Chicago). — Seit 1870 finden sich bei Russ unverkennbar Einflüsse der Düsseldorfer Schule ("Ruinen-Romantik"). Andererseits setzte Russ sich auch intensiv mit Rousseau auseinander. — Die "Penzinger Au" war eventuell gar kein real existierender Ort, sondern einfach ein Motiv, das an vielen Orten in dieser Art vorkommen könnte. Damit traf er offenbar genau die Naturvorstellung der städtischen Bevölkerung (die sein Publikum war), denn ein Zeitgenosse äußerte sich begeistert über die Qualitäten, die dieses Bild auszeichnete: "... die gewissenhafte Zeichnung, den sicheren, flotten Vortrag, im Verein mit einem Zauber des Tones und der Stimmung, wie ihn Ruß in keinem seiner früheren Bilder erreichte. Ein Übergangsmoment ... geeignet für den Ausdruck ahnungsvollen Webens und Verschwimmens zarter Töne, duftiger Farben. ..." (Carl von Lützow, 1887). Es war Russ gelungen, einen Ort zu malen, von dem der aufgeklärte, moderne Stadtmensch nur noch träumen konnte, der trotz Industrialisierung, Säkularisierung und Entzauberung der Welt einen großen, Bilderzyklus "Die Monate". Schon allein das Format - ein schmales Hochformat - ist für eine Landschaftsdarstellung ungewöhnlich, noch ungewöhnlicher allerdings ist das Motiv: Es handelt sich um einen matschigen Waldweg bei Tauwetter. Entsprechend "matschig" sind auch die Farben. Eine Vorherrschaft von Grau- und Brauntönen, durchsetzt vom schmutzigen Weiß der Schneereste, unterstreicht die "Unfarbigkeit" des Bildes. Dennoch handelt es sich keineswegs um ein Bild, das Unbehagen im Betrachter auslöst: ganz im Gegenteil! Nur zu bekannt ist in unseren Breitengraden dieses Tauwetter nach langem Winter, das sich mitunter wochenlang hinzieht und eben genau diese Farben in der Natur weckt, die als erste davon künden, dass bald grün und farbenfroh der Frühling Einzug halten wird. So sind also offensichtlich die Farben die eigentlichen Stimmungsträger und nicht das Licht (wie meist bei den französischen Impressionisten). Only a few darkly dressed people are out and about. The wooden panel is left partly visible, the paint has been applied in thick impasto using short brushstrokes. Just a few strokes suffice to render the wood planters, a cape, or the statues on their plinths. Tina Blau painted her monumental park landscape for the 1882 International Exhibition at the Vienna Künstlerhaus. According to an anecdote, the jury initially rejected the painting on the grounds that its brightness “would tear a hole in the wall.” It was only after the intervention of Hans Makart that the work was included in the exhibition. It brought overnight success for Tina Blau. In 1883 it was exhibited at the Paris Salon where it received an honorable mention. In order to capture the different atmospheres, light, and details of nature, Tina Blau pushed her handcart loaded with painting utensils through woods and meadows and painted outdoors. However, the vast scale of Spring in the Prater required her to work in her studio that was located in the midst of Vienna’s Prater park. The painting was retrospectively described as the first Impressionist work in Austrian art. Vergleiche der einzelnen Variationen zeigen, dass Courbet durchaus nicht sklavisch der Naturvorlage verpflichtet war, sondern diese nach seinem jeweiligen Interesse veränderte: Das Bild des Belvedere zeigt "Das schwarze Loch" (so der Name des dargestellten Ortes) vor allem als einen Bachlauf, der von Bäumen so sehr beschattet ist, dass das helle Licht eines Sommertages, wie man ihn rechts oben durch ein Loch in der Bewaldung sehen kann, nicht bis unten durchzudringen vermag. Das Licht wird links von der glatten Felswand reflektiert, das Wasser aber liegt im Dunkeln. The genre-like depiction of Bivouacking Russian Soldiers is still entirely in the tradition of Biedermeier Realism.
