— [Georg Lechner, 9/2009]</schema:description><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/1993/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/115634/full</schema:image><schema:name>Allegory of the Transferral of the Imperial Gallery to the Belvedere</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1781</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Vinzenz Fischer]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Vinzenz Fischer</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Oil on canvas</schema:artMedium><schema:description>
A slight smile flits across the face of Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor, who is standing in the foreground on the right and is dressed like a Roman imperator. He has a reason to be happy: Athena, the goddess of wisdom and art, has come up to the round temple and is giving him advice. The imperial collections had grown considerably over the course of the 18th century—to the extent that the Hofburg Palace no longer had sufficient space for them. It is therefore quite opportune that his finger should now be pointing at the Upper Belvedere, which was standing empty at that time; it is where the imperial gallery would be transferred from 1776. It is here, too, that the „Holy Family with John the Baptist as a Boy“ by Raphael and his workshop—identifiable on the left of Fischer’s painting - would find a fitting new home. Despite the Baroque partiality for allegorical pictures, no larger realization or reproduction of this small painting is known, even though it resembles a study. This can probably be explained by the advancing Enlightenment, which broke with the splendor of the Baroque and paved the way for Neoclassicism.</schema:description><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/3023/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/140702/full</schema:image><schema:name>Johann Nepomuk Reichsritter von Humbourg</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1770</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[August Friedrich Oelenhainz]</schema:creator><schema:creator>August Friedrich Oelenhainz</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Oil on canvas</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/4476/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/5296/full</schema:image><schema:name>The Battle of Hochkirch</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>after 1769</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Johann Christian Brand]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Johann Christian Brand</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Oil on canvas</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/3432/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/65403/full</schema:image><schema:name>Gerard van Swieten</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1769</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Franz Xaver Messerschmidt]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Franz Xaver Messerschmidt</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Tin-lead alloy, gilded</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/8815/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/16984/full</schema:image><schema:name>Luna and Endymion</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1765</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Johann Georg Dorfmeister]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Johann Georg Dorfmeister</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Lead, bronzed</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/1942/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/4520/full</schema:image><schema:name>Empress Maria Theresa in Widow’s Attire</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>c. 1770</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Franz Messmer, Maria Theresia Walburga Amalia Christina von Österreich]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Franz Messmer</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Oil on canvas</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/3229/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/156736/full</schema:image><schema:name>Homage to Maria Theresa</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>c. 1769</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Franz Anton Maulbertsch, Maria Theresia Walburga Amalia Christina von Österreich]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Franz Anton Maulbertsch</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Oil on canvas</schema:artMedium><schema:description>Das besonders fein ausgearbeitete Gemälde diente als Vorlage für ein radiertes und gestochenes Blatt von Johann Veit Kauperz, das als Frontispiz des fünften Bandes des Supplementum Codicis Austriaci Verwendung fand. What does the ideal emperor look like? Maulbertsch presented Emperor Joseph II as a benevolent Roman imperator. Although still exuding Baroque opulence, ideas from the Enlightenment are conveyed in the subject matter. The emperor’s motto—“Virtute et Exemplo” (By Virtue and Example)—is emblazoned on the medallion in the background. And the commander is presented as a man of the people, guiding personifications of light and abundance to the poverty-stricken mother and child. The foreground scene refers to a specific event in Slavíkovice near Brno when the emperor himself is said to have steered the plow. </schema:description><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/8278/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/158132/full</schema:image><schema:name>Divine Providence and Virtues</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>c. 1765</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Franz Anton Maulbertsch]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Franz Anton Maulbertsch</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Oil on canvas</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/3026/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/17004/full</schema:image><schema:name>Saint Mary Magdalen</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1759</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Johann Baptist Hagenauer]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Johann Baptist Hagenauer</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Tin-lead alloy</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/3689/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/17005/full</schema:image><schema:name>Saint Peter</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1759</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Johann Baptist Hagenauer]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Johann Baptist Hagenauer</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Tin-lead alloy</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Sculpture</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/3690/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/115687/full</schema:image><schema:name>Joseph Carl Zaillner von Zaillenthal</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>c. 1764</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Martin Johann Schmidt]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Martin Johann Schmidt</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Oil on paper</schema:artMedium><schema:description>Diese Ölgrisaille diente als Vorlage für einen von Ferdinand Landerer ausgeführten Porträtstich (Inv.-Nr. 6942) von Kommerzialrat Joseph Carl Zaillner von Zaillenthal, dem Besitzer der Schwechater Kattunfabrik. The pavilion in the right-hand foreground is expecting a prominent guest. None less than the monarch Maria Theresa will enjoy the view from here. On the one hand she can overlook the castle in Laxenburg that belongs to the imperial family, on the other she can easily watch the falconry from this position. In this case, the falcons are being used to hawk herons, but not to kill them. After checking their condition, the herons were generally released back into the wild. Brand captured this courtly pastime in a series of four paintings, of which this is the first. They are precise depictions of the area around Laxenburg near Vienna. This was extremely innovative because up until that time landscapes had often been the product of their painter’s imagination. Brand was able to propagate this new painting style in his role as a professor at the academy in Vienna; as a result, he became an influential figure for nineteenth-century Viennese landscape painters.</schema:description><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/8377/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/158131/full</schema:image><schema:name>Raising of the Cross</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>c. 1757/1758</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Franz Anton Maulbertsch]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Franz Anton Maulbertsch</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Oil on canvas</schema:artMedium><schema:description>Diese drastische Darstellung geht auf Vorbilder wie Rubens' kleine Kreuztragung im Pariser Louvre, andererseits auch auf Rembrandts Version des Themas in der Alten Pinakothek in München zurück. In 1750 the Vienna Academy for the first time set an allegorical rather than a biblical subject as the theme of its painting competition. In this interpretation by the young Maulbertsch, Minerva, the goddess of art, takes center stage. As the competition task stipulated, she represents the monarch Maria Theresa. Accompanying Minerva is the Academy, symbolized by a young woman, who is helping her judge the artistic disciplines. The Academy is thus serving the protector of art. Maulbertsch won over the jury with his dynamic poses, dramatically unfurling garments, and theatrical effects of light and shadow. He was awarded first prize and, with it, the promise of lucrative commissions in the future. </schema:description><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/10025/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/6145/full</schema:image><schema:name>White Gyrfalcons with a Heron</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1748</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Philipp Ferdinand de Hamilton]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Philipp Ferdinand de Hamilton</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Oil on canvas</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/2862/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/5258/full</schema:image><schema:name>Landscape with Castle Ruin and Horse Cart</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>1746 (?)</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Christian Hilfgott Brand]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Christian Hilfgott Brand</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Oil on canvas</schema:artMedium><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/2894/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/12520/full</schema:image><schema:name>Emperor Francis I Stephen</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>c. 1745/1765</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Martin van Meytens d. This is a struggle between ecclesiastical and secular authority. In an elegant dress Eudoxia (d. 404 CE), the wife of the Eastern Roman Emperor Arcadius, is standing at the bottom of the steps to a church. She requests admittance but it is denied her by John Chrysostom, the patriarch of Constantinople, because in her material greed she had taken possession of a widow’s vineyard and thus incurred his anger once again. One of the empress’s acolytes wants to use violence to force her way in, but in that very moment his arm is paralyzed. Only when he implores John Chrysostom for forgiveness is his strength restored. The unusual episode that Baumgartner has chosen here can be traced back to a voluminous illustrated book on the lives of the saints, whose fourth edition was published in Augsburg in 1734. The artist was based there at the time and was subsequently able to establish himself as a designer of printed artwork.</schema:description><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/3134/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/12525/full</schema:image><schema:name>Christ and the Captain of Capernaum</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>c. 1750/1755</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Franz Anton Maulbertsch]</schema:creator><schema:creator>Franz Anton Maulbertsch</schema:creator><schema:artMedium>Oil on canvas</schema:artMedium><schema:description>The captain of Capernaum falls to his knees before Christ, begging him to help his sick servant. Jesus hears his plea, cures the boy, and praises the captain’s faith. Such smaller paintings with biblical themes are frequently encountered in Franz Anton Maulbertsch’s early art. Characteristics of these works include the figures’ expressive faces, their features verging on caricature, and the contrast between dazzling light and dark shadows. Furthermore, the composition with its elaborate gestures and garments imbues the depiction with heightened drama. </schema:description><schema:artForm>Painting</schema:artForm><schema:url>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/objects/4832/rdf</schema:url></schema:VisualArtwork></schema:itemListElement><schema:itemListElement><schema:VisualArtwork><schema:image>/internal/media/dispatcher/4580/full</schema:image><schema:name>Portrait of a Man</schema:name><schema:dateCreated>c. 1750/1760 (?)</schema:dateCreated><schema:creator>[Martin van Meytens d. Auffällig ist, dass der Dargestellte, der Hofbaudirektor sowie Protektor der Akademie war und die Neuordnung der kaiserlichen Gemäldegalerie in der Stallburg organisierte, im Harnisch gezeigt wird. Dies ist auf seine Rolle als Offizier im Spanischen Erbfolgekrieg und im Türkenkrieg 1716/17 zurückzuführen. Außerdem dürfte dieses Objekt Teil einer Serie von Feldherrnporträts gewesen sein. — [Georg Lechner,
