Elfriede Baum vermutete eine Herkunft aus dem Ahnensaal der Wiener Hofburg, was bislang jedoch nicht verifiziert werden konnte. Ferdinand I. wird hier jedoch mit ungewöhnlichen Attributen gezeigt: Er berührt auf dem Tisch vor ihm zwei unbearbeitete Steine. Maximilian II. hingegen hat Münzen und Prägestempel vor sich liegen. Beruhend auf der Tatsache, dass die Gemälde um 1904 durch eine Fotografie im Gelben Salon des einstigen Winterpalais des Prinzen Eugen in der Wiener Himmelpfortgasse nachgewiesen sind, ergibt sich jedoch noch eine weitere Möglichkeit. Da dort unter Maria Theresia die Behörde für Bergbau und Münzwesen untergebracht wurde, kann es sich bei den beiden Gemälden auch um Auftragsarbeiten im Zuge der Umbaumaßnahmen der 1750-er Jahre handeln. Dies würde jedenfalls mit den auf den Tischen präsentierten Objekten korrelieren (freundlicher Hinweis von Mag.
