Self-examination in paintings is at the center of Maria Lassnig’s artistic exploration. In her body awareness painting she developed a visual language that revolves intensely around the relationship between how we perceive ourselves and how we are perceived by others. This iconic double self-portrait shows the artist depicted on the background canvas in a frontal standing pose, a confident filmmaker holding a camera. At the same time she appears in the foreground—pensive, introspective, seated. In her work she addresses with searing concentration representation, mediality, but also the emancipated gaze. Das Selbstbildnis von 1959 ist charakteristisch für das Frühwerk des Künstlers: Aus dem dunkelgrau-schwarzen, pastos aufgetragenen Hintergrund ist eine physiognomische Kontur herausgearbeitet, deren kräftiges schwarzes Lineament auf die Beschäftigung mit dem Strich und dem Zeichnerischen verweist. Es sollte nun dazu ein drittes Bild entstehen. In der Literatur ist dazu folgende Anekdote überliefert: Zunächst war ein Bild mit dem Motiv des verlorenen Sohnes geplant. Lange Zeit stand die Tafel unbearbeitet in Kokoschkas Hotelzimmer, ehe er sie Heise mit dem Kommentar zeigte, es sei nun doch kein "verlorener Sohn", sondern der "Dritte Mann" daraus geworden. Unverkennbar sind die Gesichtszüge Kokoschkas in der Figur des Zauberers. Der Titel spielt auf eine Szene aus Mozarts "Die Entführung aus dem Serail" an. Bei einem gemeinsamen Besuch jener Aufführung in Dresden kam es nämlich scherzhaft zur Vergabe des Spitznamens "Selim Bassa" an Dr. Heise. Bohdan Heřmanský, born Theodor Herzmansky in Bohemia, grew up in Vienna. He quickly made a name for himself in Austria and was one of the leading members of the Nötsch Circle. Even after the disintegration of Austria-Hungary into many individual nations and his own stays in Stockholm, Siena, and Paris, he retained an attachment to the culture of the former multi-ethnic state. In 1929 he finally moved to Prague, which features in many of his paintings. This selfportrait also shows him on a town square with a colorful row of houses in the background. His right hand is tipping his hat in greeting, and his gaze is fixed on the viewer. During the interwar period, Franz Lerch, a native of Vienna, was regarded as a proponent of New Objectivity. However, his works from these years, despite their understated neatness, do not appear cold or austere, but always warm, organic, lively as compared to the works of his German counterparts. The woman portrayed here, Roxane Zurunić, cultivated a remarkable path in education for her time. She began her painting studies at the Vienna Academy in 1920 and pursued art history, archaeology, psychology, and architecture in Vienna and Zagreb, where she received her doctorate in 1938. She worked as a teacher and took part in numerous exhibitions with her works. We see the young woman captured in this portrait as self-confident, distinctive, and elegant. His bony body contrasts with the woman’s soft curves, who looks down, lost in thought. Despite their physical proximity, the two bodies appear isolated. Schiele’s own family would never come into existence. His wife Edith died of Spanish flu on October 28, 1918, when she was six months pregnant. Egon Schiele died three days later. As a painter and organizer of exhibitions, Moll features prominently in the “Who’s Who” of fin-de-siècle Vienna. In 1897 he co-founded the Vienna Secession. One year before painting this portrait, Kokoschka had met Moll’s stepdaughter Alma Mahler. In his short artistic career, Richard Gerstl remained an outsider. A passionate music lover and student at the Vienna academy, he refused to exhibit his works in public and had little contact with colleagues. Independently from the various artist groups in Vienna, from 1905 onward he started developing a radically modern expressiveness that seems ahead of its time and was probably inspired by the works of Edvard Munch. When he died at the young age of twenty-five, he left behind around eighty works, which did not become known to a wider public until several decades later. They include numerous selfportraits, mostly with a serious expression. This was the motto of the Secession and harked back to an ancient Roman tradition. In the “sacred spring” newborns were dedicated to the gods and would be sent to settle new land upon reaching adulthood. In this work, Luksch-Makowsky thus reflects the dawn of a new art as well as a new phase in her own life as a mother. Wieder wird eine Kunstwelt mit Leben erfüllt – diesmal durch einen großen Hund, der bei seiner Jagd nach der Katze den Maler samt seinem Hocker hochhebt und mit beiden Beinen durch das Bild stößt. Der Witz der Darstellung offenbart sich darin, dass der Kopf des Künstlers im Maul des gemalten Nilpferdes landet und der Afrikaner im Bild durch das Zustoßen mit dem Speer den Eindruck erweckt, er würde den Maler retten. Das "Kunstgebilde" auf der Staffelei, das mit dem Kulturkreis des Meisters nichts zu tun hat und auf Basis mehrerer graphischer Vorlagen gefertigt wurde (zu sehen an dem an die Leinwand gehefteten Blatt, sowie am aufgeschlagenen Buch neben der Staffelei), ist somit inhaltserweiternd eingesetzt und durch die realistisch geschilderte Jagd des instinktgeleiteten Hundes ad absurdum geführt. — Danhauser konnte weder mit dieser Szene, noch mit dem "Scholarenzimmer" auf eine gebräuchliche Bildform zurückgreifen, denn Darstellungen von Malern waren bislang auf Selbstporträts beschränkt. Im Gegensatz zu diesen, die allein auf die eigene Person und auf die berufliche Würde ausgerichtet sind, klammerte Danhauser sich selbst aus, brachte eigene Situationskenntnisse ein und schilderte die Begebenheiten als Beobachter von außen. Durch die Verflechtung von realer und fiktiver Ebene hat er im vorliegenden Gemälde fortgesponnen, was er im "Scholarenzimmer" kritisiert hatte: Er wollte dem angehenden Künstler quasi "vormalen", was auf ihn zukommen mag, sollte er sein Fortkommen den akademischen Geboten entsprechend einrichten. Diese inhärente Kritik am Ausbildungssystem erinnert an die Forderungen Waldmüllers, denn so wie dieser in zahlreichen Schriften dafür appellierte, neben dem Kopieren das Studium der Natur nicht außer Acht zu lassen, stellte Danhauser mit seinen beiden Atelierszenen den Sinn des Kopierens und die Bedeutung des Historienbildes in seiner konventionellen Form in Frage. Obwohl er 1826 den Czernin´schen Preis erhielt und ab 1830 an der Akademie ausstellte, zweifelte der Maler beständig an seinem Können, was ihn 1831 auch zur drei Jahre andauernden Unterbrechung seiner künstlerischen Tätigkeit bewog; in dieser Zeit widmete er sich ausschließlich dem einträglicheren Schusterhandwerk. Friedrich Gauermann konnte ihn schließlich wieder zur Rückkehr zur Malerei überreden. Neder, der viele Porträts, in erster Linie aber Genreszenen malte, suchte seine Themen vor allem in seiner unmittelbaren Umgebung, im Wiener Vorort Döbling. Das Leben der Handwerker und der Weinbauern, ihre Arbeit, ihre Feste, Wirtshausszenen, tanzende oder raufende Dorfbewohner wurden von ihm in vielen Darstellungen festgehalten. Neder entwickelte in diesen Bildern einen naiv anmutenden Realismus, versuchte mit Hilfe ungewohnter, neuer Effekte den Bereich der bravourösen Feinmalerei zu verlassen. Dies wurde von seinen Malerkollegen nicht immer für gut befunden; vor allem Waldmüller kritisierte die Malweise Neders. Doch fanden seine Gemälde viele Liebhaber, die ihn in gönnerhafter Weise finanziell unterstützten; einer von ihnen ermöglichte ihm 1834/1835 auch eine ausgedehnte Reise ins Salzkammergut und nach Berchtesgaden. Neders Schilderungen basieren thematisch in erster Linie auf der niederländischen Genremalerei des 17. Jahrhunderts, die er in der Akademiegalerie kopierte. Zum Einfluss von Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685) bekannte er sich selbst in seiner Lebensbeschreibung, doch mögen auch Adriaen Brouwer (1606-1638), David Teniers (1610-1690), Jan Steen (1625/1626-1679) und Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (1606-1669) als Vorbilder gewirkt haben. Mit dem vorliegenden Gemälde, dessen Inhalt er in seiner Lebensbeschreibung mit den Worten "Zwei Fiaker, welche auf der Straße zusammenfahren und sich mit der Peitschen recht abhauen" nennt, hat der Maler auf eine amüsante, selbst erlebte Begebenheit spontan Bezug genommen. Er stellt sich selbst als Zeugen dieses Ereignisses dar, tritt links ins Bild eilend auf und kennzeichnet seine Figur mit seinem Namenszug. Der soziale Unterschied der beiden Fiaker wird sowohl in ihrer Kleidung als auch in der Gestaltung der Fahrzeuge erkennbar gemacht: während der linke Wagen durch eine Nummerierung ein amtlich registriertes Fahrzeug ist, das von jedermann, ähnlich wie heute ein Taxi, in Anspruch genommen werden konnte, war es viel vornehmer, sich einen sogenannten "Unnummerierten" mit einem in Frack und Zylinder gekleideten Kutscher zu mieten, den man wie einen eigenen Wagen fahren durfte. Die bewusst eingesetzte Reduktion im Formalen sowie die scharf gezogenen, dunklen Konturen wirken einer Räumlichkeit entgegen, auch die Gestaltung der Hausmauer im Hintergrund ist nur auf das Notwendigste beschränkt. Die Werke Michael Neders wurden lange Zeit als dilettantisch empfunden, und erst das fortgeschrittene 20. Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller presents himself in this self-portrait not in the classical artist’s pose in front of an easel with a brush and palette but as a fashionably dressed young man in a landscape setting. Right after completion, he showed the painting in 1828 at an exhibition at the Vienna academy, where he attracted considerable public attention. Although painted in a studio, the portrait convincingly simulates the open-air setting. Waldmüller succeeds in bathing the figure and landscape in the same light. Underneath his signature, which indicates that he was thirty-five years old at the time, is a peony, referring cleverly to his great skill as a flower painter.
