  • Wool and a loom—that was all Fritz Riedl needed to create his abstract geometric tapestries, which he presented at the Venice Biennale in 1954 and at documenta in Kassel in 1959. Originally trained as a painter under Albert Paris Gütersloh at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, he turned to weaving in 1949. Stylistically close to Abstract Expressionism, he was also fascinated by Fantastic Realism and was friends with its leading figures. In 1968 he took a trip to Mexico and decided to open a tapestry workshop in Gaudalajara— first together with Erich Coufal and later on his own—where he produced his own works as well as commissioned pieces for his American artist colleagues. After returning to Austria in 1976, he taught at the University of Art and Industrial Design in Linz and founded the Institute for Artistic Textile Design there, where he taught until 1991.
