Heimo Zobernig’s artistic practice spans multiple media: sculpture, stage design, painting, video, exhibitions, posters, books, design, and performance. In his early paintings from the mid- 1980s, developed within the context of Vienna’s Neo-Geo movement, the artist explored the language of geometric forms, the systematics of color, and - subsequently - spatial categories. All of Zobernig’s works are untitled, which underscores their functional role as points of reference within his exploration of the system of art and its underlying conditions. The life-size bronze sculpture of a human figure shown here draws on two works created in 2015 for the Austrian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale that were ultimately not exhibited there. Through layering, Zobernig combines them into a new figure.
