After being appointed director of the Imperial Picture Gallery in the Upper Belvedere, Joseph Rebell had the summer palace converted into a museum. He established a restoration department and expanded the presentation of the permanent collection to include the “Modern School” - a section devoted entirely to contemporary art. In addition, he served as a professor of landscape painting at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. There, Rebell encouraged students to work outdoors directly from nature, influencing the development of a new, realistic style of landscape painting in Austria. This painting, along with three other works in the Belvedere’s collection, was created for Emperor Napoleon.
