  • Since the early 2000s, Katrin Plavčak has consistently developed a painting style that is at once figurative, narrative, and highly referential. In her works, she combines elements from pop culture, literature, music, art history, and everyday life to create complex visual imagery. Set somewhere between fantasy, dream, and reality, these vibrantly colored depictions often appear enigmatic—or even unsettling, as something uncanny creeps into a seemingly familiar scene. The painting „Heart of Darkness“ references Joseph Conrad’s eponymous novella from 1899, which describes the journey of a sailor named Marlow into the colonially exploited Congo. The experiences of violence and racism evoked in the text are translated by Plavčak into a pictorial state of latent uncertainty, where subjective projections overlap with culturally shaped notions.
