Precarious living conditions, injury, and loss are some of the themes Kerstin von Gabain explores in her sculptural objects and photographs. In doing so, the artist draws on specific physical and material forms, imitating their appearance while transforming their meaning through shifts in scale. In her series Shelter for Beasts, von Gabain takes up the motif of the birdhouse and develops a sculptural form that lies somewhere between shelter, dwelling, and living object. The spiked surface of the exhibited work evokes both an animal’s nest and a fortified stronghold that, despite its tiny entrance, appears impenetrable. The work visualizes vulnerability and strength, threat and security alike, thereby exploring the individual need for protection and boundaries.
