  • Magical hybrids—figures that are half human, half animal—have been the focus of American artist Rona Pondick’s sculptural work since the turn of the millennium. From Egyptian sphinxes and deities, Greek centaurs, and Ovid’s „Metamorphose“s to fairy-tale mermaids, the motif of the chimera has fascinated people since time immemorial. Franz Kafka’s novel „The Metamorphosis“ is perhaps the most prominent treatment of the theme in modern times and also serves as a fundamental inspiration for Pondick. For her human-animal hybrids, the artist uses 3D technology to cast parts of her own body, such as her head, with the greatest possible precision, merging them with animal fragments that she has previously modeled by hand. This duality is also reflected in the treatment of the surfaces: The human body parts are rendered with naturalistic detail, while the animal bodies are depicted in smooth perfection.
