  • In her long-standing exploration of Islamic architecture, Canan Dagdelen creates sculptural works that describe spaces and make them tangible. For example, her delicate yet expansive installation white IWAN explores the architectural principle of the iwan. In medieval Persian and Arabic manuscripts, the term refers to the central representative part of a building. Over the centuries, this function evolved into a distinct architectural form within Islamic architecture in the Near and Middle East. It can be found in both palaces and religious buildings. The iwan consists of a tall space enclosed on three sides and covered by a barrel vault. In white IWAN, these contours are traced by white ceramic spheres and ovals suspended from the ceiling on threads.
