  • Nature is art—this is the credo that Dutch artist herman de vries has followed for more than fifty years. A trained botanist and landscape gardener, he turned to art at an early age and gained recognition as an Art Informel painter and member of the artist group nul. Starting in the 1970s, ecological issues became central to his practice, establishing him as one of the leading figures in Environmental Art to this day. In his artistic research, de vries combines scientific methods such as observation, systematization, and archiving with mythological narratives and philosophical questions. During his daily explorations of nature in the Steigerwald Forest in Bavaria and on his travels, he collects items such as flowers, stones, branches, soil, bones, grasses, and minerals. In rosa canina, he arranges rose branches—found objects known as objets trouvés—into a deeply sensory installation whose striking visual impact stems from its distinctive blend of simplicity and sensuousness.
