  • When Alfons Schilling began studying at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna in the mid-1950s, he became part of a postwar Austrian art scene undergoing a period of upheaval and reorientation. Even his early expressive, abstract paintings challenged the tradition of panel painting and made him a driving force within Viennese Actionism. Subsequently, Schilling’s interest shifted from pictorial expression to processes of perception, which he explored in experimental setups using kinetic and optical effects. During a five-month stay in Paris in 1962, he created the series of „Rotationsbilder“ (spin paintings), in which a circular support is set in motion by an electric motor. While he worked directly on the canvas with a brush at lower speeds, rapid rotation only allowed for the pouring of paint. The spinning support makes dynamism the work’s defining principle, leading to a destabilizing visual experience.
