  • In her painting and performance practice, Selma Selman poignantly explores questions of origin, gender, discrimination, and resistance. Her own identity as a Romani woman born shortly before the outbreak of the Bosnian War is regularly woven into her work in a deeply personal way. The paintings, created on discarded car parts and scrap metal, draw on materials that have formed the economic foundation of her family’s livelihood for generations. Selman transforms hoods, doors, and scrap metal into carriers of her autobiographical narratives, which unfold through a poetic visual language. The repeatedly depicted female bodies appear vulnerable, powerful, or as surreal hybrids, subverting conventional social attributions.
