Here we see a scene from the Old Testament. A woman, whose child had died, maintains she is the mother of another woman’s newborn. Both women claim parenthood. In order to find out who is telling the truth, King Solomon rules that the child should be cut in two with a sword and each woman will be given half. The true mother then reveals herself as, rather than see her child come to harm, she gives him up. The depiction shows the height of the drama: the moment when the mother intervenes. The artist was probably not Maulbertsch himself but a painter from his orbit. The work’s theatrical lighting and characteristic faces are reminiscent of the master’s late work.
