  • A seasoned painter of the Ringstrasse era, Karl Karger composed monumental ceiling paintings such as the ones at the Vienna Burgtheater and the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Almost two years after the completion of Vienna’s Northwestern Station, he managed to capture the mighty hall and paint a vivid picture of its hustle and bustle. The train has just pulled in, and the place is densely crowded with people engaged in various activities. As passengers arrive and meet their loved ones, baggage handlers offer their services and a railroad employee works on the steam engine. There is a noticeable difference in social status evident in the clothing of the people depicted.
