Hardly dressed, the woman is lying on the sofa. She is wearing hold-up stockings and a corset that cuts deeply into her body at the waistline. Of her face we can only see part of her mouth and a heavily made-up eye: she is reading while also expecting the male viewer. However, the visual impression is not defined by the woman alone, whom Beckmann has traced with a black outline. The stockings that she is wearing are also black, as is the sofa. To this are added the primary colors of yellow, red, and blue. Yellow is the color of the blanket on which the woman is lying and that simultaneously highlights her voluptuous forms. Red with white is the color of her corset, and blue is the color of the flowers that seem to be hovering over the woman\u2019s lap and thighs. Everything - the clothing, the flowers, the tantalizing, almost provocative pose - makes the woman look like a prostitute. But perhaps it is Beckmann\u2019s wife Mathilde who was also painted nude by her husband, who lovingly called her Quappi? A clue lies in the gray slippers that the woman is wearing."},"medium":{"label":"Medium","value":"Oil on canvas"},"onview":{"label":"On View","value":"1"},"media":{"label":"Media","value":["https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/internal/media/dispatcher/4806/full"]},"title":{"label":"Title","value":"Reclining Woman with Book and Irises"},"classification":{"label":"Genre","value":"Painting"},"primaryMedia":{"label":"PrimaryMedia","value":"https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/internal/media/dispatcher/4806/full"},"displayDate":{"label":"Date","value":"1931"},"id":{"label":"Id","value":"12362089"},"iiifManifest":{"value":"https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/apis/iiif/presentation/v2/1-objects-2914/manifest"},"dimensions":{"label":"Dimensions","value":"72,5 × 116 cm"}}]}
