  • The painter and graphic artist Lilly Steiner, née Hofmann, studied at the Women’s School of Art in Vienna. Together with her husband Hugo Steiner she established Haus Steiner, built in 1910 by Adolf Loos, as a meeting place for the Vienna art scene. In 1927 the couple moved to Paris. Although still influenced at first by Expressionism, she gradually adopted a more decorative style. Steiner reacted to the rise of National Socialism in Germany and Austria with a growing politicization of her art. This self-portrait painted in 1937 shows the artist in her studio looking questioningly at the viewer. In the year of Austria’s annexation to Nazi Germany, Steiner’s work became even more explicit in its depiction of the downfall of Austria after Hitler’s takeover.
