This is a struggle between ecclesiastical and secular authority. In an elegant dress Eudoxia (d. 404 CE), the wife of the Eastern Roman Emperor Arcadius, is standing at the bottom of the steps to a church. She requests admittance but it is denied her by John Chrysostom, the patriarch of Constantinople, because in her material greed she had taken possession of a widow’s vineyard and thus incurred his anger once again. One of the empress’s acolytes wants to use violence to force her way in, but in that very moment his arm is paralyzed. Only when he implores John Chrysostom for forgiveness is his strength restored. The unusual episode that Baumgartner has chosen here can be traced back to a voluminous illustrated book on the lives of the saints, whose fourth edition was published in Augsburg in 1734.
