Marc Adrian started studying sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1950 with Fritz Wotruba. In 1953–54 he joined the Wiener Gruppe. It was during this period that he began exploring movement, rhythm, and optical structures, producing his first mobiles and behind-glass montages. For these works, Adrian mounted industrial glass with a textured surface in front of backgrounds constructed with colored rods or painted surfaces. As viewers move past the works, different shapes, colors, or words become visible in succession through the prism of the glass. This perceptual shifting gives rise to questions about a new, participatory role for the viewer, as well as the categories of time and movement. In 1965 Adrian participated in the landmark exhibition The Responsive Eye at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and in 1967 he presented two works in the show Kinetika, curated by Werner Hofmann at the Museum of the 20th Century—now known as Belvedere 21.
