  • Holding a large watermelon in her hands and wearing a headscarf and a white apron, a woman, perhaps a domestic helper, stands in front of a plain, light-colored wooden wall. Her skin is tanned, and she looks at us with a gentle smile. In addition to portraits, Udo Weith also created traditional costume depictions, landscapes, and still lifes. What is striking in this rendering is the dark contour that outlines all surfaces and clearly separates them from one another. In 1930, the Viennese painter, graphic artist, and restorer attended a glass painting course at the Vienna School of Applied Arts, where he learned how to connect individual panes of glass with lead joints. This could have ended up directly influencing his painting style.
