  • Since the late 1960s, VALIE EXPORT has grappled with questions of female identity and how a society dominated by men oppresses women and denies them self-determination. The body occupies a central role in her performances and actions. In the photographic series “Body Configurations,” she analyzes body language as an expression of mental and emotional states by inserting female bodies into the architecture of public spaces. In this image the figure is sitting in a corner of a building. A black line underscores her pose with outstretched arms, visualizing the tensions between the individual and the reigning power structures.
