Walther Gamerith shows a group of men wounded in war. Their faces contorted, their movements clumsy, they seem to be hypnotically following the beat set by the marching drummer in the foreground. Is this a personification of death, or does the figure represent the warmongers, or war itself? The artist leaves this question unanswered. Gamerith painted this disturbing, deeply melancholy scene after his military service in World War II. It is part of a gloomy series of works in which the artist engaged with his experiences in the war."},"medium":{"label":"Medium","value":"Oil on canvas"},"onview":{"label":"On View","value":"0"},"media":{"label":"Media","value":["https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/internal/media/dispatcher/102537/full"]},"title":{"label":"Title","value":"The Survivors"},"classification":{"label":"Genre","value":"Painting"},"primaryMedia":{"label":"PrimaryMedia","value":"https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/internal/media/dispatcher/102537/full"},"displayDate":{"label":"Date","value":"1948"},"thesconceptsMotive":{"label":"Motive","value":[{"iconClassURL":"https://iconclass.org/24B1","content":"waxing moon, i.e. facing this way: )"},{"iconClassURL":"https://iconclass.org/48C75","content":"making music; musician with instrument"},{"iconClassURL":"https://iconclass.org/31F31","content":"death dancing with more than one human being"},{"iconClassURL":"https://iconclass.org/48C7341","content":"drum (musical instrument)"},{"iconClassURL":"https://iconclass.org/31F23","content":"death as man"}]},"id":{"label":"Id","value":"12363291"},"iiifManifest":{"value":"https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/apis/iiif/presentation/v2/1-objects-4517/manifest"},"dimensions":{"label":"Dimensions","value":"93 x 98 cm"}}]}
