Helene Funke had to surmount many obstacles to achieve her goal of becoming a painter. Since women were not allowed to attend academies, she studied at a private art school in Munich. Funke’s time in France provided her with a wealth of inspiration, the most prominent influence being Henri Matisse’s vibrant colors that are echoed in this painting.
