From 1920 to 1938 he was an active member of the Hagenbund artist association. He moved to Paris in 1925, where he quickly established himself on the art scene. In 1934 he married Hermine Fränkl from Vienna. When Paris was occupied by the Nazis, the couple were forced to emigrate. They managed to flee to New York in 1941, and it was not until 1955 that they returned to Vienna for a visit.
