Motifs from the mythical “Orient” were popular among the bourgeoisie in the late 19th century and were a favorite subject of the Paris-based painter Édouard Frédéric Wilhelm Richter. Scheherazade, narrator of Persian Arabian Nights mythology, is frequently illustrated in his work. In keeping with this theme, here an elegant, magnificently attired woman leans in her chair and stares ambiguously at the viewer. Somewhat disconcerting is the hairpin she holds in her left hand, and the dim illumination of the scene only adds to the uneasiness.
