Maria Helena Kerzmann (1807–39) pays great attention to her appearance and is clad in a dress of exquisite gray shimmering silk, a highly fashionable Kashmir shawl adds a splash of contrasting color. Her older husband Mathias (1765–1845), on the other hand, is wearing plain black. And it is to him, not to her mother, that their daughter Maria (1831–51) turns.
