  • Maulbertsch modeled this small painting on a monumental work with the same title by Rembrandt van Rijn. It shows a scene from the Old Testament: Samson possesses invincible strength derived from his hair. Delilah, a Philistine, entices him to reveal his secret and shaves his head while he is asleep. Samson is then captured, blinded, and imprisoned. Rembrandt’s painting was in the collection of Count Schönborn in Vienna until 1905. Maulbertsch could therefore have seen the original. However, Maulbertsch used different colors suggesting that he was probably basing his painting on a print of Rembrandt’s work.
