Erwin Wurm’s work tests the limits of sculpture. In the late 1990s, he begins separating the authorship of his art from its execution by having others perform actions. Following precise graphic or written instructions, individuals pose and interact with perfectly ordinary objects in absurd ways. The sixty-second performative acts produce temporary sculptures that are recorded in photographs or on video. Seasoned with humor, Wurm’s “One Minute Sculptures” explore the sculptural potentials of commonplace situations, actions, and objects.
