Although the series\u2014numbering at least fifty-five works in various metal alloys and alabaster\u2014is now commonly known by this title, the designation has been in use only since 1805. Messerschmidt himself referred to them simply as \u201cKopfstücke\u201d (head pieces). Across the series, the sculptor explores a wide range of facial expressions and grimaces, likely based on his own features.\r\n\r\nSeveral of the busts push these expressions to extremes, including the present example, with its tightly squinting eyes and firmly pressed lips."},"title2":{"label":"Alternative Title","value":"Ein düstrer finsterer Mann"},"medium":{"label":"Medium","value":"Lead alloy (58.8% lead, 40.4% tin)"},"onview":{"label":"On View","value":"1"},"media":{"label":"Media","value":["https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/internal/media/dispatcher/165284/full"]},"title":{"label":"Title","value":"\"Character Head\" No. 34"},"classification":{"label":"Genre","value":"Sculpture"},"primaryMedia":{"label":"PrimaryMedia","value":"https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/internal/media/dispatcher/118276/full"},"displayDate":{"label":"Date","value":"1770/1783"},"id":{"label":"Id","value":"11558150"},"iiifManifest":{"value":"https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/apis/iiif/presentation/v2/1-objects-792/manifest"},"dimensions":{"label":"Dimensions","value":"43 x 22 x 24 cm, Basis: T = 16, B = 12,5 cm"}}]}
