Arthaber had made his fortune from the manufacture and Europe-wide sales of his Viennese shawl, a popular fashion accessory from the period. Amerling depicts the successful businessman, collector, and art patron as a father, surrounded by his children in an elegant salon. A small picture that is said to depict their deceased wife and mother connects the family members in loving memory. Although the ambience of the setting appears to capture domestic culture in the early 19th century, the painting was in fact composed in the studio.
