Viewers thus take on the role of secret observers giving the scene voyeuristic undertones.\r\n\r\nCupid, the son of Venus, seems to be filling his quiver with arrows, about to slip away unnoticed\u2014a motif found both in the visual arts and literature since the Renaissance.\r\n\r\nArtists have used depictions of Venus to define ideals of female beauty since the early modern period.
