  • Sasha Auerbakh’s artistic practice can be understood as an ironic play with signs and their meanings. She draws on visual codes from everyday life, translating them into sculptures while simultaneously imbuing them with personal narratives. The installation Untitled (Hats)—a collection of colorful circular metal forms mounted on poles of varying heights—resembles the concept of “hat.” However, this expectation is subverted and pushed into the realm of the absurd through the materials used, altered proportions, and mode of presentation. Navigating the tension between image and object, abstract motif and representational depiction, Auerbakh thoroughly unsettles familiar patterns of perception and the contexts of meaning that accompany them.
