  • Johanna Kandl’s paintings focus on economically and socially marginalized groups within society. The depicted locations and scenes are based on photographic snapshots that Kandl took during her numerous travels to regions of the world marked by structural change. The precarity of everyday life, as well as the global entanglements of capitalism, the economy, and the operational logic of a rapidly expanding neoliberalism are themes in her works. These are reflected in motifs centered on small-scale trade, scrapyards, and both legal and illegal markets. They are contrasted with the slowed-down process of painting as a continuous engagement with and reflection on what has been experienced and observed.
