  • Georg Eisler consistently developed his realist figurative style over decades, independently of other contemporaneous artistic movements. When it came to the content, however, he consistently brought his present to the canvas, addressing current world events and repeatedly depicting confrontations, demonstrations, and violent riots. Newspaper reports, photojournalism, or observations from his immediate surroundings served as his source material. The large-format painting Belfast shows armed soldiers on the left side of the canvas taking cover behind a house wall. Remarkably unfazed, two women with shopping bags stroll right past them. In Eisler’s painting, the military deployed in the midst of the politically and religiously motivated conflict between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland appears so ordinary that it is already accepted with a certain sense of calm.
