The art of the 1980s was largely shaped by the resurgence of painting, which a younger generation of artists radically reinterpreted with a marked irreverence toward prevailing artistic conventions. “New Painting” playfully combined figuration and abstraction, translating both onto the canvas through an expressive visual language and intense use of color. Among the pioneers of this new art movement was Alfred Klinkan, a painter who died at the age of just forty-four. His painting Solar Disc exemplifies this new spirit: Through expressive brushwork, Klinkan created a poetic, delirious world characterized by a veritable flood of color, featuring hybrid beings that clearly draw on depictions of animals from (Egyptian) mythology. Klinkan’s deeply subjective pictorial worlds are imbued with a certain faith in imagination and emotion.
