  • Born in Vienna in 1937 as the daughter of Jewish emigrants, Tess Jaray grew up in London. Trained at the Slade School of Fine Art, she quickly developed an independent artistic language informed by Concrete Art, which she used to explore the perceptual effects of color and composition. Starting from basic geometric forms, Jaray uses patterns, repetitions, distortions, chromatic harmonies, and contrasts to probe the relationships between form and content, image and viewer, painting and space. During a family visit to Vienna in the early 1960s, she created drawings of the interior of St. Stephen’s Cathedral that she subsequently developed into a series of large-format paintings, including St. Stephen’s Way II. As is often the case with Jaray’s works, the title also offers an interpretive point of entry that reveals the tension between nonrepresentational painting and Gothic architecture.
