For the puppetlike figures Joan and John Boy, Knebl has meticulously crafted the individual body parts and joints. The viewer’s attention is immediately drawn to the androgynous-looking Joan, who wears a gold chain around the neck. Dangling from this accessory are four pendants modeled after a vulva, a penis, and breasts. The soft appearance of the pink leather skin contrasts sharply with the ceramic head, heightening the figure’s artificiality.
