Margarete Hamerschlag studied printmaking, fashion, and stage design with Franz Čižek at the Vienna School of Applied Arts. By the early 1920s, she had established herself as a successful graphic artist. Between 1924 and 1934, she lived in the Rosenhügel housing complex in Vienna, which was built for freelance artists. In 1934 she emigrated to Palestine with her husband, Joseph Berger, a student of Adolf Loos, before moving to London in 1936. After the Nazis seized power, her ties to Austria were effectively severed. In London, she built a successful career as a portraitist and illustrator. In Self-Portrait in Yellow, Hamerschlag confidently stages herself using color to create an interplay with the surrounding space.</value></field><field label="Genre" name="classification"><value>Painting</value></field><field label="Id" name="id"><value>12373243</value></field><field label="Source ID" name="sourceId"><value>92634</value></field><field label="Location" name="locationssite"><value>Belvedere 21</value></field><field name="media" mediaRecordID="131086" label="Media"><type>image/jpeg</type><license identifier="BV-C"/><mediaCopyright>Foto: Johannes Stoll / Belvedere, Wien</mediaCopyright><value>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/internal/media/dispatcher/131086/full</value></field><field label="Motive" name="thesconceptsMotive"><value iconClassURL="https://iconclass.org/31A(+4)">three-quarter profile</value><value iconClassURL="https://iconclass.org/31D15">adult woman</value><value iconClassURL="https://iconclass.org/22C8">shadow</value></field><field name="iiifManifest"><value>https://sammlungtest.belvedere.at/apis/iiif/presentation/v2/1-objects-92634/manifest</value></field></object>
