  • The sublimity of nature and the infinite possibilities of color—translating natural forms into large-scale paintings through brushstrokes that are both precise and intuitive—form the lifelong focus of Herbert Brandl’s artistic practice. His rapid, expressive painting style initially led him to be associated with the Neue Wilde in Austria, who brought the medium of painting back into the spotlight in the 1980s. However, he is less a figurative Neo-Expressionist than a sensitive, romantic observer of nature who put the painting process and color itself at the center of his work. His depictions of mountains, trees, sky, light, and water oscillate between recognizability and pure chromatic abstraction. Brandl began studying under Peter Weibel at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in 1978. He exhibited at documenta 9 in Kassel in 1992 and represented Austria at the Venice Biennale in 2007.
