  • In his artistic and activist practice, Oliver Ressler addresses pressing issues related to democracy, economics, migration, and ecology, seeking to expose not only their structural causes but also forms of resistance and possibilities for action. The video in the multipart installation Fly Democracy refers to a military campaign by the US armed forces during the early stages of their interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq. Alongside countless bombs, the military dropped leaflets containing messages for the local population. These included warnings to avoid military targets as well as purported justifications for the attacks. Appropriating these means, Ressler designed ten leaflets presenting arguments in favor of participatory democracy. The idea of direct involvement in decision-making stands in deliberate contrast to the model of representative democracy as practiced in the United States and other neoliberal capitalist states.
