  • Around a long table Josef Danhauser has gathered an illustrious party on an outing in the country. They have paused for a rest in front of a farmhouse. At either end of the table we see very striking contrasts. In the shadows on the left, a care-worn bachelor contents himself with a glass of sugar water. He refuses to join in with the music. Brightly illuminated on the right is a family with hats, scarves, and landscape paintings piled at their feet. In the background, a painter is writing a quote attributed to Martin Luther on the wall like a silent commentary: “Whoever loves not wine, women, and song, remains a fool his whole life long.”
